Established in 1862, Muswellbrook Race Club is one of Australia’s oldest continuously operating race clubs and a proud part of the Upper Hunter’s sporting and community history.
Today, the Club hosts 18 race meetings each year and has built an excellent reputation throughout the racing industry. Muswellbrook attracts strong support from leading country, provincial and metropolitan trainers, along with many accomplished jockeys who regularly compete at the track.
Located approximately three hours north of Sydney via the New England Highway, Muswellbrook sits at the heart of one of Australia’s most significant thoroughbred breeding regions. The Upper Hunter is home to internationally recognised studs including Coolmore, Darley, Arrowfield, Newgate and Vinery, placing the Club within a region renowned for producing and developing some of the country’s finest racehorses.
The wider Muswellbrook Shire is also shaped by strong agricultural, wine and mining industries, giving the area a distinctive regional character and making the racecourse an important meeting place for local businesses, families, racing participants and visitors.
Muswellbrook Race Club is located approximately 2.5 kilometres west of the Muswellbrook town centre, just off Denman Road.
The racecourse precinct is known as Skellatar Park, named after the original estate on which the track was established. The property was owned by the Bowman family from the late 1800s until the 1950s, forming an important part of the site’s history and identity.
The Club is also recognised as one of the largest regional training centres in country New South Wales. Five tracks are used across the precinct, including the course proper, B-grass, sand, cinders and dirt tracks. These facilities support the daily training and development of thoroughbreds from across the Upper Hunter and surrounding regions.

Beautifully maintained gardens, shaded lawn areas and views across the racecourse create a welcoming atmosphere for racegoers, members and guests. The Club’s facilities are used throughout the year for race meetings, weddings, corporate functions, private celebrations and community events.
The newly redeveloped Silks Function Centre has further strengthened the Club’s offering, providing a contemporary venue for approximately 200 seated guests. Together with the Garden Bar & Café and the expansive racecourse grounds, the Club offers a range of flexible spaces for both intimate gatherings and large-scale events.
